From the beginning, CSI has emphasized the importance of the analysis laboratory as a driver of change when it comes to polymer coatings. Thanks to our partnership with Zeiss, we have created a state-of-the-art R&D/QC laboratory that provides valuable support for both internal operations and external R&D projects.

The CSI laboratory offers consulting and analytical support in the physico-chemical analysis of elastomers and plastics, from material identification to comparative analysis of various materials and consulting on formulation choices based on customer needs.

Our experts are able to provide specialized consulting on the chemical composition and formulation of elastomers, using advanced tools to ensure quality and innovation.

Chemical Composition Analysis (IR)

CSI offers consulting on coatings and elastomers, using chemical analysis for quality control, new product development, and failure analysis, with infrared spectroscopy to study the composition of non-metallic materials.

Determination of the Coefficient of Friction (COF)

The coefficient of friction (COF) is crucial for evaluating the lubrication and wear of rubber and plastic, affecting the installation of seals and component assembly. The COF measurement is carried out according to the Continental ATE N 553 59 25 00 standard.

Determination of Lubricant Film Thickness

The thickness of the surface treatment is crucial for coating performance. CSI uses SEM microscopy and stereomicroscopy with polarized light to accurately measure thicknesses below 1 micron and identify micro-inclusions, ensuring quality and durability of the treatment.

Surface Analysis (SEM)

CSI employs advanced microscopy for sub-micrometric analyses, essential for quality control and materials research. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is used to assess the coverage level of treatments and the morphology of inorganic fillers in materials.

Tensile Testing

Tensile strength indicates a material’s ability to withstand tension forces. CSI performs tests to determine the load and elongation at break, both on standard specimens (ASTM D412) and on O-Rings to simulate real conditions. We also offer tear tests according to ASTM D624 B/C/T.

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)

TGA quantifies the formulation of materials, identifying the main components of the recipe, such as volatile components, elastomers, inorganic fillers (carbonates), oxidizable components (carbon black), and inert materials, by analyzing the thermogravimetric curve of rubbers, plastics, and surface treatments.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry Analysis (DSC)

DSC measures the heat flow during material transformations, useful for analyzing phase transitions, crosslinking, and crystallization in the rubber/plastics sector, assessing the usage range and production process parameters.

Cleanliness

ISO 16232:2018 and VDA 19 standards regulate the cleanliness inspection of rubber and plastic components, ensuring quality and reliability. CSI performs Cleanliness assessments using optical and electron microscopy, in compliance with these regulations.

LABS-frei Analysis

LABS (or PWIS) are substances that interfere with the painting process. The product analysis verifies the absence of substances that compromise paint wetting (LABS / PWIS). The analysis is performed in accordance with the VDMA 24364 standard.

PFAS Analysis

PFAS substances have significant environmental and health impacts. In response to the ECHA restriction proposal, CSI launched PFAS-free coatings in 2024 and offers analysis to detect their presence, following ASTM D7968-23 and the limits set by ECHA.
